My van caught on fire today.
There was a weird sound under the hood, and I think we left part of our car on the road. A passing driver yelled, “You’re on fire!” Before we saw any smoke. We pulled off the road and onto the grass and gathered up most of our things and got away from the van.
My husband called 911 to let them know what was going on. I heard him say, “Follow the smoke. You should be able to see it now.”
It did go up pretty quickly.

So sorry to hear about your car. It is awesome that you can turn such a negative into a positive though. So will the car catch on fire because of wicked fairies?
I think gremlins are more likely to do something like this…or dragons. It’s actually a very boring story. I’ve been trying to think of a way to make it more entertaining. That’s where the dragons come in.
First, I’m glad you are OK. We had the same thing happen to our Ford minivan about 15 years ago — it caught on fire as we were driving. I pulled off on a city street and a guy inside his house saw the fire and brought out an fire extinguisher and put out the fire before the Fire Department got there. However, after dealing with State Farm Insurance I decided that if it ever happened again I would just let it burn down to the ground THEN call the Fire Department.

I’m curious about what happened, but I don’t know if it’s possible for anyone to tell with all the fire damage. We saved most of our things…like my bike. It was in the car with us. We were just coming back from getting some adjustments on it.
Our fire was traced to the ignition switch — Ford had a major problem with this and they were recalled in Canada before my fire, but not here in the States. There was a class action lawsuit against Ford and about five years after the fire I got my $500 insurance deductible back. Dealing with the lawyers at Ford convinced me to never buy one of their products again.
I don’t think ours was the ignition switch since there was noise under the hood first. The insurance company is supposed to look at it tomorrow. We offered to send pictures to save them the trouble, but they’ve got to go anyway. It will be interesting to see if they’ve got any answers.
